Vision

To be a leading center of excellence in the provision of quality and diverse academic programmes and student support services that will meet the unique needs of adult learners in the communities and thus contribute to the realization of education for all and the creation of a learning society that values its independence, democracy and self-reliance. 

 

Mission

To maintain a leadership role in pursuit of knowledge through quality and relevant teaching, research development, consultancy and community service by: -

  1. Initiating and developing quality market-driven academic programmes to meet the special needs of adult learners in the various regions of the country.
  2. Organizing regular debates, workshops, public lectures and other types of discourse all over the country and thus facilitating expression of opinions by all on issues affecting their governance and other matters they may consider important.
  3. Maintaining efficient and effective student support systems for learners in open and distance learning. 

Core Values:

 

  1. In performance of their duties and roles, the staff and students in the Department Of Extra-Mural Studies shall be guided by professionalism, integrity and honesty.
  2. In its teaching and in all other academic endeavours, the department shall strive to offer quality programmes that afford everyone the opportunity for airing one’s views in the cherished university’s mandate to seek and disseminate the truth without prejudice, harassment or censorship.

 

  1. So as to offer services at the highest level of professionalism, the department will strive to afford all its academic and administrative staff members opportunities and encouragement to train to their highest level possible, and to also create a conducive environment for work that will include collective decision making and adequate and comfortable facilities at the work place.

 

  1. As the department whose mandate mainly lies outside the walls of the university, the department will make it its central responsibility to promote and protect the good name and the image of the University of Nairobi by offering irresistible programmes of quality and relevance, by behaving in a manner befitting a university of repute, and by doing all those other things that will make this objective a reality.
